John L. Council Farm
John L. Council Farm is a diversified farming operation which practices sustainable agriculture methods. It is located in Shannon North Carolina. The 68-acre land is used conservatively to reduce and enrich soil through crop and livestock rotations and preserving natural habitat of wildlife in the woods. The land is section off as woodland, pastures and row crops. Pastures are rotated to avoid damaging pasture growth and depleting soil nutrients. Crops are rotated to minimize disease, to reduce destructive insect population and the need for chemical applications. Every seventh year, the sections of the land is rested--no crops or livestock is allowed on those sections. This practice has been passed down from generation to generation. It allows nature to replenish and build up the soil. We do not use any chemicals on our land or crops and our livestock are not given any growth hormones or antibiotics. All of the livestock have their separate pastures. The compost that we made is used on the farm. Therefore, we have chosen to use sustainable agriculture practices because we believe that "you are what you eat".
